Transforming Medway council into a digital-first organisation through strategy and skills transfer
In 2016, Medway Council announced an ambitious goal: “To provide digital services so good that all who can use them prefer to do so”. Medway procured FutureGov as a digital transformation partner to help them become the modern, digital-first organisation that can deliver on this promise.
Medway asked FutureGov to refine their vision into a set of clear principles, skill up both staff and the leadership team, and embed a culture of digital innovation across the council by identifying the technology and ways of working they needed to successfully deliver.

Following a period of research and immersion with council staff and leadership, we co-created a strategy with design principles and measurable goals. To help Medway achieve those goals, we designed necessary the service and technical roadmaps. In addition, we developed two proofs of concept for the new strategic direction by delivering two practical exemplar projects through a FutureGov-run innovation lab in the council.
To ensure Medway had the skills to fully deliver this future vision, we also ran a bespoke digital training programme for the senior leadership team and supported with the recruitment of team members with the right digital skills (who could scale the two exemplar projects).
We identified approximately £7.35 in savings over three years from combined workstreams. Through the exemplar projects, the digital transformation team feels confident leading digital innovation projects. They are also using agile practices, reducing future project risk and increasing their pace of delivery.
